Biblical Ways to Love Your Spouse on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is celebrated every year on February 14. But what does the day actually mean? Saint Valentine’s Day honors the ancient Roman Christian martyrs and dates back all the way to the 5th century. Lupercalia was a Roman festival held in mid-February and it celebrated fertility rites and paired men and women via a lottery system. Pope Gelasius I changed Lupercalia to Saint Valentine’s Day near the end of the 5th century and by the 14th century, Valentine’s Day became what it is known for today, which is a day of romance.

Valentine’s Day is often signified by giving your spouse chocolates, flowers, cards, fancy dinners, and intimacy. While those things are wonderful, they should be considered a staple in your relationship with your spouse no matter what time of year.

Along with these usual gifts and affection, consider adding the biblical ways discussed below to show and celebrate love with your spouse on Valentine’s Day.

Be Kind, Even During Difficult Times

Love is patient, love is kind. 1 Corinthians 13:4 NIV

Kindness is easy to give when everything is going right in your marriage. But kindness is most impactful when times are tough. Your spouse could be having challenges at work, dealing with some mental hurdles, or simply acting out of character for some reason. Practice being kind to them, not only on Valentine’s Day, but every day throughout your marriage.

Seek And Value Tranquility With Your Spouse

A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh… Proverbs 14:30 ESV

Arguments and disagreements will develop from time-to-time but a Christian marriage should not include constant arguing and fighting about who is right or wrong. If it seems like this has been happening more often lately, seek tranquility and unity with your spouse and value it when it’s received. Let them know you’re working on yourself in this regard so they understand why there may be a slight change in your words and actions. You may be surprised at how much stronger your relationship with your spouse can be when you seek unity rather than striving to always be right.

Submit Your Body To Your Spouse

Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love. Proverbs 5:18-19 ESV

When you married your spouse, you became one with them. God created sex to allow a husband to submit their body to their wife and vice versa. When you yield your body to your spouse, you can truly feel a spiritual connection with them. You feel your spouse’s body and soul and they feel yours. This Valentine’s Day, focus on submitting your body to your spouse and you’ll have a much sweeter connection with them during and after making love.

The strongest Christian marriages show mutual love and respect not only on Valentine’s Day, but every day.
