The Importance of Sex in a Christian Marriage

Some people may think anything pleasurable is ungodly, especially when it comes to sex. According to the Bible, that couldn’t be further from the truth. God intended for husbands and wives to have sex. At the beginning of the Bible, sex is one of the first acts God commands between a husband and wife:  

"Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." Genesis 2:24-25

This is an important scripture because as the couple leaves both of their old families and creates a new family unit, sex is the bond to become one.

Sexual relations are intended to be tangible expressions of love for each other. God gave a married couple a wonderful and fulfilling outlet for the love they share with each other. The spiritual combines with the physical in a unique way of expressing love.

Proverbs 5:18-19 explains how sex aids in showing love in a Christian marriage:

“Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love.“ 

Notice the connection between enjoying the physical body and being emotionally thrilled by the love you express. 

In 1 Corinthians 7:2-5, Paul clarifies the importance of marital sex:

“2 But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. 3 The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5 Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.“

Here, Paul seems to liken marital sex to a strong “armor” against Satan’s temptations (ie: extramarital sex.) The more frequent and consistent sex you have with your spouse, the stronger the barrier becomes against outside temptations.

Many times the Bible proclaims sex is vital in marriage because it strengthens the bond between the couple. Because God created humans to have a continuous craving for sex, it seems he wants spouses to have sex on a regular basis so they can consistently refresh and strengthen their bond. But with today’s stressful and hurried lifestyle that can drain energy and desire, keeping the sexual embers burning takes a dedicated effort.
