Good Marriage Is Not Luck - It’s Commitment
Good Marriage Is Not Luck - It’s Commitment
With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, people tend to talk about all the lucky things they have in life. Sure, it’s possible to be lucky every once in a while, even if you believe meeting your spouse was pure luck. However, anyone who says they have a strong marriage and are lucky because of it should think about why their marriage is strong to begin with. It takes hard work to have a strong marriage, and sometimes the daily challenges are overlooked in the long-run, but they shouldn’t be.
A Good Marriage Isn’t Lucky
Every married couple will have arguments, disagreements, and hurt each other’s feelings. As rough as those circumstances can be in the moment, they provide spouses with the opportunity to strengthen their marriage. When two people have given their lives to one another, they can conquer anything together. Getting through those tough times might seem funny years afterward, but they can’t be overlooked at points when your marriage became stronger. A good Christian marriage takes a lot of time, even when you think your relationship is as strong as possible on the day you get married. Life circumstances will test your relationship, and you should never sell it short by saying you were lucky to get through it.
Honesty Makes Christian Marriages Stronger
Lying repeatedly to your spouse will only end up bad. Small white lies occasionally to keep the peace will happen, but your entire relationship can’t be built on them. You have to confront any issues you’re having with your spouse and work them out through honest conversations. That doesn’t mean those conversations will be easy to have, though.
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:13-14 (NIV)
Honesty and forgiveness are essential to maintaining a strong Christian marriage. Without them, you’ll be lucky to have a happy marriage.
Commit To Strengthening Your Marriage
Every day is a commitment to strengthen your marriage, whether it’s at the forefront of your mind or not. You have a choice to respect your spouse and be honest with them or constantly lie to them and only think about yourself. If you have a good marriage now, it’s a result of the hard work and effort you both put into it daily. It’s not the result of luck. Remember the tough times and what it took to overcome them because you have to remain committed to getting through them together for the rest of your lives.
No one truly “lucks” into a strong marriage that lasts a lifetime. Constant appreciation and dedication to your spouse are what Christ had in mind for Christian marriages.
